I made a bubble and disappeared just as Xav did the same. I anticipated the move after I had used it. That would make this all the more challenging.

I took a shallow breath and stood completely still, eyes and ears open.

I thought I heard a shuffle. I heard my breath. There it was again. I grinned.

Xav was taller and heavier than me. Every step he took pressed the grass down under his shoes. He might as well have announced his presence. Lucky for me, the moon had done that for me.

Footprint, footprint, footprint. The grass bounced back behind him, but I watched his slow, careful process as he went. The shuffling stopped. He must have realised the sound was audible. As long as he didn't realise the grass betrayed his presence, I could use it to my advantage.

The question was, what did I do with this information? I chewed my lip and thought.

I couldn't blast him while he was in a bubble. His bubble could absorb my magic and give him the chance to throw it back at me. While possibly not deadly, it would knock me off my feet again, and make me vulnerable to whatever else he had up his sleeve.

I rubbed the new tattoo on my arm, carefully crafted beside the first one. No creature I created would get past his bubble, no matter how badass.

Unless…

I followed his steps with my eyes as he circled around to where I thought he might be. I pictured him waving his arm in front of him, but touching nothing. I almost felt his frustration. I smiled. Good, let him get angry and careless.

I stalked toward him on tiptoe, each step silent and light. When I got close enough, I turned to the side and stuck out my leg.

Xav stepped forward and tripped.

"What the fuck?" In his surprise, he dropped his bubble and appeared in front of me on his hands and knees. Shame I didn't have time for any snide remarks. A few good ones came to mind.

Before he could think to respond, I dropped my own bubble and slammed him the rest of the way to the ground with a fist of magic. He flailed his arms and legs, but I wasn't going to let him up, not until this was done.

"How long do I have to wait?" I asked over my shoulder.

"For the count of ten," Gunter replied.

I was glad he was the one who answered. It made Xav even more furious, and gave more legitimacy to my win.

Xav muttered something I couldn't make out. I pressed my magic down a little harder.

"What was that?" I cocked my head at him.

"Piss off," he growled.

"Charming." I smiled sweetly. "One. Two. Three…" I counted slowly .

"Four. Five." Matt moved to stand beside me, a grin on his face.

We counted together. "Six. Seven. Eight. Nine."

"Ten." Gunter said firmly. "Peyton wins. Let him up." Without another word, he turned and walked away.

I shrugged and lifted the magic from Xav's chest.

He jumped to his feet.
